Men’s Styling Wax vs. Styling Clay: What’s the Difference?

Men’s Styling Wax vs. Styling Clay: What’s the Difference?

Two popular choices among men’s styling products are wax-based products and clay-based products. We are here to break down the differences so you know what is best for your hair type.

Waxes

Waxes have become very popular in the last few years because in many ways they’re a nice middle ground. It’s an especially messy category, though, and they broadly include things also called pastes or putties. They can give a very solid hold, they’re flexible, and they’re easy to use. They’re especially good for messy looks that you see everywhere now. Most waxes are very affordable and last a long time. According to headandshoulders.com, there are a few things to watch out for when using a wax-based hair product. Because wax is insoluble in water, it takes a deep clean in order to fully remove it. If not removed properly, the product will create build-up on the scalp and may cause irritation and may make the hair feel and look greasy. Wax can easily deliver an effortless look and a good wax can last all day. It is a go-to product for an everyday hairstyle.

Pros:

  • Doesn’t harden like gel
  • Restyleable through the day
  • Good for different hair lengths
  • Matte appearance

Cons:

  • Weaker hold than some other products
  • Can cause build-up if not washed out of hair properly
  • Harder to find fragrance free

Clays

Clays are a newer hybrid product for matte disheveled looks with a lot of texture and definition. They tend to give more volume than wax, with a similar medium hold. Clay-based products are the newest to the men’s grooming scene. While wax gives you shine and hold, clay-based products are targeted towards people who want an extreme amount of volume with a more matte and natural finish. Clay is ideal for those who want more body and to enhance the volume in their hair. Curly or wavy hair would benefit from clay product’s conditioning and moisturizing aspects and the strong hold it provides. Clay-based products are typically more pricey, but you don’t have to use as much product per use, which leaves you with more bang for your buck. Clay pomades have the ability to stimulate hair growth and can draw dirt from the hair without removing natural and essential oils.

Pros:

  • Doesn’t harden like gel
  • Conditioning agents
  • Good for different hair lengths
  • Can be used for a messy look or more professional appearance
  • Natural appearance
  • Volume

Cons:

  • More expensive than other products
